Book of the Month // Christian Dior at the V&A

Opening this weekend, Saturday 2nd February, the much anticipated Christian Dior exhibition at London’s V&A Museum has nearly sold out. Spanning 1947 to the present day, this exhibition will trace the history and impact of one of the 20th century’s most influential couturiers, exploring the enduring influence of the fashion house, and Dior’s relationship with Britain. Of course a fabulous book accompanies this magnificent exhibition which began it’s series of preview viewings last night.

“There is no other country in the world, besides my own, whose way of life I like so much. I love English traditions, English politeness, English architecture. I even love English cooking.”

Capturing the highlights of the exhibition, this stunning volume celebrates the House of Dior from its foundation in 1947 to the present day.
Haute-couture gowns by Christian Dior and the illustrious creative directors who followed him, Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano, Raf Simons, and Maria Grazia Chiuri are showcased here, all photographed by Laziz Hamani.
Archival material including design sketches by Christian Dior, and press and fashion photography provide colourful context, amplified by introductory texts to each section by V&A Fashion Curator Oriole Cullen.
An opening chapter by Cullen looks at Dior’s creative collaborations with influential British manufacturers, and his most notable British clients, from Princess Margaret who’s 21st birthday dress is on display in the exhibition to author Nancy Mitford and ballet dancer Margot Fonteyn.
It also revisits Dior’s spectacular fashion shows staged in England’s most luxurious stately homes, including at Blenheim Palace in 1954.
