Gstaad, A Private Alpine Residence
The luxury hotel, Alpina Gstaad in Switzerland opened it’s doors in December 2012, and it was the first newly built hotel in the resort for 100 years. Amongst the 56 rooms and suites in the hotel were a handful of luxury apartments for sale to private individuals. Alongside architects Chalet Bau Matti I created one of them, a three bedroom apartment for a delightful couple with an extensive art collection to consider.
Decorated in entirely old timber sourced from old farmhouses in Saanenland, and decadent detailing by way of silk wallpapers, lacquer and indulgent rich fabrics, this apartment is a sociable place so the details were key. Warm ambient lighting, a beautiful table service and luxurious bedlinen for all the rooms.
The owners extensive art collection was instrumental in the design development, and quite early on in the design process an East meets West theme emerged because my client wanted to have her Buddha Sculpture by the Tibetan artist Gonkar Gyatso included into the space. He is one of the first pieces you notice as you enter and sets the scene for this striking alpine space.
With an Hermès Balcon du Guadalquivir table service and bespoke Cristofle Talisman silverware, and Baccarat crystal glassware the dining room was most certainly one of the most important rooms here.
With plenty of room to fit the little ones in, these alpine bunks, a trademark design of mine, each with their own little set of curtains to draw at night, also teams up as the kids playroom once everyone arrives back from the slopes…
It’s a beautiful place, I shall fondly remember my coffee breaks in the sun-filled salon at the hotel. I have to say it was such a pleasure to work on. Happy memories for years, and I hope my clients will love it for years ahead. ND
