ART > Carpenters Workshop Gallery | Masterpiece London 2014
Returning for it’s fifth year, Masterpiece London at The Royal Hospital Chelsea, offers over 3000 years’ worth of art history from antiquity to contemporary art and design for one of the most exclusive gallery events worldwide. If you didn’t make it to Basel, your senses will be overwhelmed with the cultural and historical edits at each stand this year. Galleries of note include Apter Fredericks Ltd, Philip Mould & Company, Gordon Watson, Rose Uniake and as we share here, Carpenters Workshop Gallery.
As the fair opens today, we wanted to share our edit of notable pieces from Carpenters Workshop Gallery (booth A38) who’s work we follow from their stands in Miami and Basel over the year to their galleries in London and Paris.
Maarten Baas – Smoke Pleyel Piano, 2013 Charred wood, Epoxy Resin
You will no doubt have witnessed the work of Maarten Bass before. His Smoke Collection was conceived during his time studying at the Eindhoven Academy. On reflection of the design process itself, designers are encouraged to strive for beauty and perfection. Damage is often repaired to maintain an original concept, and it was this idea that grew into the Smoke collection.
“Instead of picking a piece of furniture as it was, or trying to restore it to it’s original state, I burn it”
Shape and symmetry are altered, the surface carbonised and treated with an epoxy resin to make it usable again. Perhaps true for a chair, but perhaps not this piano.
Rick Owens Plug Table, 2013, White Marble
We first witnessed Rick Owens’ furniture collection a few years ago at Maison Objet. His bold use of materials and scale have resulted in a highly collectable collection of objects, chairs, stools, daybeds and tables. We love this table, reminding us of Alpine nights on the terrace around the ice bar in Les Gets.
Charles Trevelyan, Stance Grey, 2103, Patinated Bronze
London based Australian designer, Trevelyan’s first solo show with Carpenters Workshop Gallery opens on 7th September. Featuring 11 pieces, all cast bronze or aluminium, we are treated to a preview this week at Masterpiece.
Wendell Castle, Shadow 2008, Stained Walnut with Oil Finish
Wendell Castle has been a sculptor, designer and educator for more than four decades. An influential artist his work has led to the devlopment of handcrafted, modern design furniture as a major art form. Using bold and graceful lines, his pieces have become quite the collectors pieces over the decades. This week, Carpenters Workshop Gallery are presenting his piece, Shadow.
Humberto & Fernando Campana, 2103, Sushi Cabinet, Limited Edition
What a curious piece, and a design we know well. The Campana Brothers are famed for their striking and playful designs. This Sushi Cabinet is no exception. Made using carpet, rubber and fabric over a polished stainless steel structure. An edition of this piece presented this week was selected for one of our projects in St Moritz last year as you can see below.

‘Masterpiece’ Sue Webster & Tim Noble
The Sladmore Gallery on Bruton Place this year presented a stand dedicated to one of their most successful artists, and one who’s work we know well, Nick Fiddian Green. His single minded concentration on the horse as a subject has earned him a dedicated following. A replica of his studio has been created at this years Masterpiece.
Linley this year presented a very interesting stand. A step away from their usual aesthetic, a very modern special edition chair was presented which has been produced from a single sheet of copper, walnut and upholstered in a custom leather. Exceptional craftsmanship, as you would expect from this iconic British brand. The wallpaper used was by De Gournay and the light by Baroncelli.
