NOA design Hotel Hubertus, South Tyrol, Italy
You may have noticed this spectacular pool in recent design journals, the location not new, in fact the Hubertus Hotel has been run by the Hubertus family since 1960. Each year, the family add a new addition or renovation to their hotel.
24 new rooms have been added, so 60 in total, and the new jaw-dropping pool was last years eye-watering edition. This 25m lap pool was designed by NOA Architects, and brings to the total to six pools, some of them whirlpool and plunge pools. Quite something in South Tyrol, Italy.
The spa element of the hotel is big here, wellness is the hotels tag line, an infrared sauna, grotto style steam bath (see images below) and herbal sauna. There are also the majestic views of the UNESCO World Heritage Site overlooking the Dolomites amongst the 5,000 sq/m Alpenreych Park.
The pool projects 17m from the front of the hotel, the rectangular structure is raised 12m above the ground by the trunks of native larch trees which have been stripped of their bark, and sneakily hide the vast metal structures to keep the structure safe.
The glazed opening on the underside offers you the sensation of floating, and at 12m above the ground, it’s quite a sight.
Panels of dark grey stone cover both the inside and outside of the structure, and were selected to resemble the colours of the surrounding mountains.
“The hidden edges of the pool, kept in anthracite coloured stone, abolish teh gap between pool and landscape, creating the impression of the water flowing into nothing, disappearing between pool and landscape.”
The swimming pool forms part of an extension that has been continued over to the new structure. NOA clad the exterior with angled tree trunks which act as sun screens in the warmer months and snow protectors during the winter.
