INTERIORS // Terminal Neige Refuge de Montenvers

Legendary for its history, magical by nature and envied for its panoramic view, the Mer de Glace at Montenvers, above Chamonix is one of the finest jewels of the French Alpine heritage. Covering over 7km, at 6725 feet above sea level, facing the Mont Blanc summit, this ocean of ice impresses and attracts thousands of visitors and climbers every year. This summer, there is a new reason to visit. New life at the refuge has been restored following an extensive renovation this July 2017 by the Maisons et Hotels Sibuet brand, a pioneer in the mountain hotel business for over 30 years.

The more leisurely adventurer of today will enjoy the climb from Chamonix aboard the mythical little red cog Montenvers railway, offering an exceptional ride, winding through the forest, in between peaks before reaching the icy giant. As for the serious adventurers, hikers, climbers or skiers, they access Montenvers in the winter either by the platform of the Aiguille du Midi or the Grands Montets ski or rappeling and crossing the Mer de Glace, to reach the staircase and then access the cable car that leads to the train station. We though, are inclined to stick the cute red cog train.

The Montenvers Refuge in it’s own right, is a place of history and authenticity. Built in 1880 to accommodate the first mountaineers and travellers who came to visit the Mer de Glace, it displays a sober granite façade, dotted by many small windows.

At the Refuge du Montenvers the historical charm of the site, as well as the Refuge spirit seep into the unconscious of each visitor, a place of sharing, simplicity, authenticity and homecoming. Sleeping high in a mountain refuge such as Terminal Neige, Refuge du Montenvers exudes old-fashioned charm in its 20 renovated rooms, suites and dormitories.

The original furniture has been preserved and re-used to give it new life. In the bedrooms, old wooden chimneys have been transformed into bookcases, bedside lamps replaced with miner’s lamps and leather travel trunks, brought back from journeys and expeditions of the past, turned into bedside tables.

In the bathrooms, the use of stone highlights the washbasins and retro bathroom fittings. There is absolutely everything you need to enjoy unique experiences with your family, friends or newly-found room-mate.

Terminal Neige, Refuge du Montenvers offers you all the simplicity and conviviality of a refuge with the comfort and modernity of a hotel. Choose from dormitory style rooms (sleeping up to 10) to family rooms and double rooms. The refuge rates include room accommodation, breakfast and dinner.

The refuge has 2 restaurants, Le Panoramique Mer de Glace bistro, a modern bistro design with its vast terrace and the traditional looking cosy Restaurant du Montenvers.

You’ll be taken on a journey into the past, a tribute to the architectural and historical heritage of Montenvers, which has been witness to the greatest mountain climbers, adventurers, famous artists and writers.
