Our Work // Terraces & Outdoor Spaces

We’ve quietly been filling our blog with so many cultural excursions, weekend visits to galleries and exhibitions and sharing the works of others, we thought lets get back to NDID this week. So we decided on a round up of our project terraces and outdoor spaces. The UK and Europe have been enjoying a glorious heatwave this past month, which got us thinking about outdoor spaces and how adaptable they need to be.

Many of our studio projects are based in The Alps, and plenty of those chalets and apartments are used by our clients all year round. It’s incredibly important for us to consider this during our design process. How will our clients use these spaces? To escape the hustle of busy family holidays, to have a morning coffee? Apéro hour is a big thing in France, would they enjoy a rooftop bar? Outdoor dining is a given if there is the space, nothing better than a giant reclaimed wood dining table to all gather around. Or would they enjoy a log fire, fire pit or chimney? One thing is for certain, there’ll always be a basket of blankets and sheepskins close by.

Here is our round-up of a few of our favourites over the years…

Our project here in Saas Fee opted to take advantage of being able to install an outdoor chimney and log fire. The protective glass cover kept the terrace safe and easy to maintain, above in the day and below by night.

The project above created a dining terrace with views for miles, perfect long summer suppers.

Nicky’s very own Ferme de Moudon commands views across the valley to sun blessed mountains, laced with trees and bird song, the wrap around terrace works all year round, and just out of sight on the lower level is a secondary terrace where in winter a snow bar is built next to the jacuzzi.

One of our clients here in Val d’Isere has been known to pull her ND Collection Shaggy Chair straight out of her living room and on to her terrace to enjoy the mid morning sun.

This project in Chamonix was to create a home for a family moving out here permanently. This terrace is lined up with deck chairs, one for every member of the family.

This little bedroom terrace is the perfect spot for a secret night cap…

Of course we do more than chalets, and this absolutely beautiful villa sits proudly on the Castello di Reschio Estate. The villa was merely a wilting shell before Nicky worked her magic and of course every single outdoor space has been designed with the views in mind.

The intense summer heat means that these outdoor spaces need shade, whether by canopies or clever landscaping, the outdoor dining area takes advantage of the greatest view across the estate and beyond.
