Plaza 18 Vejer / Our First Hotel Project in Spain
Recently we’ve been sharing a walk through tour of our first hotel project in Vejer, Southern Spain via our social media channels, this week we wanted to share a little more on this fabulous gem of a hotel.
Plaza 18 is a six bedroom luxury hotel in the heart of Vejer’s medieval quarter and adjacent to the emblematic palm-filled Plaza de España. With south east elevation most rooms have views across town and the hills. Plaza 18 is set in one of Vejer’s landmark buildings, this glorious 19th Century Merchant’s House.
Nicky’s passion for art is present in the design of Plaza 18 with famous artists juxtaposed against up and coming ones. The striking oversized black and white mirror above by South African artist makes a dramatic statement in the entrance of hotel. Nicky designed the bespoke console to sit beneath the mirror and complement the monochromatic entrance scheme.
The building dates from 1896 and stands on the foundations of an ancient 13th Century Arab House which has been restored using local craftsmen and entirely organic building materials including traditional lime-based mortars, wooden floors and natural stone and marble, while energy efficiency is guaranteed using the very latest renewable technology. The original black and white floor tiles were therefore lifted and re-laid on newly levelled floors.
Arriving into the hotel, there is no reception area to contend with, as your arrival is taken care of at the properties larger sister hotel next door. This allows for a more peaceful lobby area, and offers a more relaxed home away from home style stay.
Bespoke doors and specially commissioned brass handles make for an impressive entrance to every room.
Surely there is nothing more welcoming than a well stocked drinks trolley as you arrive into the living room. This honesty bar can be enjoyed by the guests at Plaza 18. The painting above is of Admiral Lord James de Saumarez who is connected to Plaza 18 by virtue of his service alongside Admiral Lord Nelson as his second in Command.
“We have brought new life back into this Gran Señora by respecting its history and embracing a new chapter for the modern traveller,” says Nicky.
Breakfast is served on the ground floor, Nicky collected these beautiful objects and artwork along the course of the project build. The banquettes are a bespoke design and David Mellor was the perfect choice for the cutlery.
Up to the first floor for the individually designed bedrooms. Each with their own colour palettes, artwork and different feel. Calming, peaceful spaces in which to escape for a long weekend or week long break.
Each bathroom was thoughtfully planned and designed, Nicky worked with one of the worlds leading perfumers to create a signature scent for Plaza 18 toiletries inspired by the aroma that perfumes Vejer. All refillable, a quiet nod to those tiny disposable toiletries that litter many boutique and luxury hotels.
The Montera (large glazed roof lantern over the patio) was carefully dismantled and repaired to its former glory. One of the magical aspects of Plaza 18 is it’s fabulous rooftop. Enjoy views across the town, Sierras and coastline. On a clear day the North African coast is visible.
The outdoor fabrics are by Perennials to complement the olive wicker chairs Nicky selected.
Nicky’s collective chic brings a timeless elegance throughout. Guests will leave feeling that Plaza 18 was the secret second home that they have always wanted.
